Since Montana legalized adult-use marijuana on January 1, 2022, the state’s cannabis retailers have sold more than $1 billion in products, with adult-use sales rising enough to offset a steep decline in medical marijuana purchases.

From January 2022 through December 2025, combined monthly sales of medical and adult-use marijuana grew roughly 13 percent, reaching $27.3 million, according to data from the Montana Department of Revenue. Over the same period, medical marijuana sales alone fell by more than 70 percent.

In 2025, Montana dispensaries recorded $327 million in total sales, with nearly 90 percent of that coming from adult-use products. Those sales generated approximately $60 million in tax revenue for the state.

By comparison, in 2022, dispensaries sold roughly $304 million in marijuana products, about one-third of which were for medical use. By 2025, annual sales had climbed to $327 million—equivalent to $287 per capita—with adult-use sales dominating the market.
