Before Avengers: Infinity War reached theaters, one Black Panther line from the trailer was already turning into a meme: “Get this man a shield!”
The line appears in the 2017 trailer when T’Challa orders Wakanda’s defenses into action and tells his people to get Captain America a shield. The internet quickly realized the screenshot could work with almost anything.
From movie line to meme formula
Know Your Meme describes the format as a catchphrase and snowclone. Instead of always asking for a shield, users swapped in whatever the person in the picture supposedly needed: a job, a charger, a haircut, a contract, a phone, some sleep, or any other punchline that fit the situation.
That simplicity is the secret. The setup is basically a command: “Get this person a ___.” There is almost no learning curve, which makes it easy for people to understand and remix.
Why the format keeps coming back
Reaction memes last when the image does more than illustrate the caption. T’Challa is pointing with authority, so every remix feels like an official order. That makes even a ridiculous request sound serious.
Sports communities have used the format to demand contracts or roster help. Relationship pages use it for dating jokes. Tech pages use it for chargers, phones, and Wi-Fi. The joke survives because the structure is broad enough to fit almost any niche.
The best version is always specific
A generic “Get this man something” joke can disappear in the feed. A version tied to a specific moment, fandom, or shared frustration gives people a reason to tag friends and add their own answer.
Question: Finish the sentence: “Get this man a ______.”
