Chaka Khan will receive the Classic Soul Honor at the 2026 Soul Train Awards, BET announced on October 22. The honor recognizes her decades of work as a singer, songwriter and influential voice in soul and R&B.
The network says the awards show is scheduled to air on Friday, November 27, at 8 p.m. ET/PT on BET and CBS. The announcement names Khan as the recipient; it is not a report that the televised ceremony has already taken place.
Why this choice resonates
Khan’s legacy reaches from her recordings with Rufus to her solo career. Songs associated with her career, including ‘Tell Me Something Good,’ ‘Ain’t Nobody’ and ‘I’m Every Woman,’ remain widely recognized across generations.
BET framed the honor around a voice and an approach to music that opened room for later performers. Her influence is heard not only in vocal styles but in the way modern R&B artists move across soul, funk and pop.
A career with several chapters
Khan released her debut solo album, Chaka, in 1978. She has also received numerous industry recognitions over the course of her career, including induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
The new Classic Soul Honor belongs to a specific 2026 event. It should not be confused with her earlier lifetime-achievement recognition or an award for a single current recording.
What viewers should know
BET’s announcement provides the recipient and scheduled broadcast date, but awards-show plans and airtimes can change. Viewers should check current local listings closer to November 27.
For fans, the recognition offers a timely reminder that the artists shaping today’s playlists often draw from a long history of performers who crossed stylistic boundaries before it became routine.
