Every natural hair journey has a moment: the chair, the scissors, the point of no return. For Sanaa Lathan, that moment happened on a film set, on camera, with no way to take it back — because she insisted on doing it for real.
The film is Netflix’s Nappily Ever After, released September 21, 2018. Lathan starred as Violet Jones — a perfectionist whose life, and hair, begin to unravel — and she also produced the movie. The story builds to one defining scene: Violet, unraveling, takes clippers to her own head.
The plan, originally, was movie magic. A bald cap. Nobody would ever know.
“A one-shot deal”
Lathan changed the plan. As she told Entertainment Weekly in 2018, she decided to really shave her head for the scene — no cap, no trick. She had “butterflies for the week before” the shoot, and she described the filming itself with the honesty anyone who has sat in that chair will recognize: it was a “one-shot deal.” Clippers don’t do second takes. Once the hair is on the floor, the scene is whatever you just did.
That realness is exactly what the scene needed, and she knew it. Violet’s big chop isn’t a performance of liberation — viewers are watching an actress actually let go of her own hair in real time, with everything that crosses a woman’s face when she does. The fear. The shock. And then, unmistakably, the relief.
She kept shaving it for four months
Here’s the detail that tells you it wasn’t just a role. After filming, Lathan didn’t immediately grow her hair back and move on. She kept shaving her head for four months — because, in her words, “it felt so freeing, so good.”
Sit with that. A woman whose career lived under Hollywood’s beauty microscope discovered, at the bottom of a haircut she did for a character, that she liked herself there. The big chop started as Violet’s story. It became Sanaa’s too.
That’s why this film — and this scene — holds a permanent place on this page. Almost every woman here knows some version of that mirror moment: the day you stopped asking your hair to make you acceptable and found out who was underneath it. Lathan had that moment with a camera rolling and butterflies in her stomach, and she chose real over safe.
