It started as a joke tweet. It ended with strangers’ tuition paid, loans knocked down, and receipts posted for the whole internet to check. This is the night Nicki Minaj turned Twitter into a financial aid office.
On May 7, 2017, Minaj was running a contest — fans could win a chance to join her at the Billboard Music Awards, and she mentioned she could fly the winner in from any country in the world. One fan, watching a superstar talk about private-jet generosity, fired back the reply a million students have typed and deleted: “Well you wanna pay for my tuition?”
She answered.
“Dead serious.”
Minaj’s reply set the terms in public: “Show me straight A’s that I can verify w/ur school and I’ll pay it. Who wants to join THAT contest?!?! Dead serious. Shld I set it up?”
The contest set itself up. All night, fans came to her timeline with the receipts of their academic lives — tuition balances, student loan payments, book costs, supplies — requests running roughly from $500 to $6,000. And one by one, she said yes. Roughly 30 fans were pledged help in that initial spree, and she followed through in the open: within about ten days, reporting tallied more than $18,000 paid to at least 8 students, with Minaj posting confirmations to her Instagram as the payments went out.
No application portal. No committee. A grade report, a bill, and a superstar keeping her word at 2 a.m. speed.
She came back and made it official
Plenty of viral moments die by Friday. This one got a sequel with letterhead. In June 2018, Minaj formalized the whole thing as a charity program called Student of the Game — and paid for 37 winners’ education expenses through it.
That sequel is what separates this story from a celebrity impulse. The first night proved she meant it. The program proved she meant to keep meaning it.

Be honest — if a superstar opened YOUR timeline for one night with “show me the grades, I’ll pay the bill,” what would you put in front of them: tuition, a loan, books for your kid? And should more artists with her reach run one night like this a year? Tell us below.
Source note: Nicki Minaj’s May 7, 2017 exchange — the Billboard Music Awards contest context, the fan’s “Well you wanna pay for my tuition?” reply, her “Show me straight A’s that I can verify w/ur school and I’ll pay it… Dead serious” answer, the night of requests, and the follow-through of more than $18,000 paid to at least 8 students with receipts posted to Instagram — is from CNN’s reporting on the exchange. The roughly 30 fans pledged in the initial spree and the $500–$6,000 request range are from TIME / Money; the $20,000+ pledged total is from NBC News via Fastweb. Her formalized June 2018 “Student of the Game” round, paying for 37 winners, is likewise from CNN’s follow-up reporting. (Billboard is the awards-show context, not the outlet that verified the payments.)
