My Sister Named Her Baby After the Man Who Cheated on Me — Then Made Him the Godfather

When life knocks you down, family is supposed to be the soft place you land. For me, family became the source of a betrayal I never saw coming.

I’m Jenny. Last year, I divorced my husband, Elias, after he cheated on me. I made myself a promise when that marriage ended: I never wanted to see that man again.

My sister apparently made different plans.

“You Have to Change It”

Yesterday, my sister shared the name she had given her newborn son.

Elias.

I could not process it at first. Of every name in the world, she had chosen the name of the man who betrayed me — the name I hear in my head when I think about the worst year of my life.

“You have to change it!” I exclaimed. “Hearing that name will remind me of my ex!”

She fell silent. No apology. No explanation that made it better. Just silence — and a baby boy who now carries my cheating ex-husband’s name every single day of his life, at every family gathering I will ever attend.

I told myself that had to be the worst of it. It was not even close.

The Party

My sister threw a gathering to celebrate the birth of my nephew, and I went — because he is my nephew, and because I was trying, for family’s sake, to find a way through this.

Then I saw who else was there.

Elias. My ex-husband. At my sister’s party. And he was not alone: with him was his new fiancée — the woman he cheated on me with.

I was still absorbing that when my sister walked up to me and delivered the real blow, like she was sharing happy news: “Don’t be mad, but we asked him to be the godfather.”

The godfather. Not a guest. Not an awkward plus-one. The man who cheated on me had been given a permanent, honored role in my nephew’s life — by my own sister.

I was furious, and I left the party immediately. There was nothing else to do. Staying would have meant smiling through my own humiliation.

The Excuse I Keep Hearing in My Head

Here is the part I understand, even though it does not excuse any of it: my family loved Elias when we were together. He helped them financially back then, and they have not forgotten it.

But he cheated on me. He ended our marriage in the most painful way there is. And I expected — I think any sister would expect — that when it came down to it, my family would take my side. Instead, they kept him, honored him, named a child after him, and seated his fiancée at the celebration like she belonged there.

What do you do when the people who should protect your heart are the ones handing it back to the person who broke it?

How I’m Coping

I am still working that out, but a few things have become clear.

My family needs to hear, plainly and privately, what this has done to me — that naming the baby Elias and making my ex his godfather does not feel like a compliment to him. It feels like a betrayal of me, and they need to understand the pain their loyalty to him causes.

I also need boundaries with my sister, said out loud: what I can and cannot be around if our relationship is going to survive this. Protecting my healing is not selfish. It is necessary.

And if my family keeps including Elias and his fiancée in the milestones I am invited to, I have to be willing to step back from those events — politely, but firmly — and only show up where I feel supported. Therapy is something I am seriously considering, too.

My nephew did nothing wrong. My sister’s choices are the problem. And I refuse to let them cost me my peace.
