Winter the Dolphin Lost Her Tail — Then Learned to Swim With a Prosthetic One

The baby dolphin was found tangled in a crab trap line off the Florida coast, barely alive. She would lose her tail — and then become the most famous dolphin on Earth.

In December 2005, a fisherman spotted a two-month-old bottlenose dolphin struggling in a crab trap near Cape Canaveral, Florida. Rescuers cut her free and rushed her to Clearwater Marine Aquarium. The rope had cut off circulation to her tail, and despite round-the-clock care, the tail could not be saved.

A dolphin without a tail should not be able to swim properly. Winter taught herself an unnatural side-to-side motion — but vets warned it would damage her spine over time.

A Tail Built Just for Her

A team from Hanger Prosthetics took on a challenge nobody had attempted: build a prosthetic tail for a dolphin. It took over a year of prototypes, a special soft gel material to protect her sensitive skin — later used to help human amputees — and patient training.

Winter accepted the tail, and learned to swim with a natural up-and-down motion again, wearing it for therapy sessions each day.

The Dolphin Who Inspired Millions

Winter’s story became the hit film “Dolphin Tale” (2011), and she became a beacon for children and veterans with prosthetic limbs, who traveled from everywhere to meet the dolphin who understood. Visitors in wheelchairs and with prosthetics were her most honored guests.

Winter died in November 2021, at age 16, surrounded by her care team. Clearwater Marine Aquarium still tells her story every day — the little dolphin who lost everything, and swam anyway.

❓ Q&A

Q: How did Winter lose her tail? A: She was entangled in a crab trap line as a baby; the injury cut off circulation and the tail could not be saved despite intensive care.

Q: Did she wear the prosthetic all day? A: No — she wore it for daily therapy and exercise sessions, and swam without it the rest of the time.
