Living with a shared memory
Hip-hop fans often return to Tupac through records, footage and stories told by people who knew him. Those accounts are valuable, but they can also place personal grief in front of a huge audience. Not every emotion fits neatly into a retrospective.
Listening with that in mind makes room for complexity. A person can speak about an artist’s cultural impact while acknowledging the people who experienced the loss directly.
