Tyron Woodley wants one thing cleared up: in his view, he never retired from MMA.
During an August 2026 appearance on MMA Junkie Radio, the former UFC welterweight champion addressed the assumption that his move into boxing meant his MMA career had ended. Woodley said he never formally announced a retirement and never treated the sport as a closed chapter.
His post-UFC career moved in several directions
After his final UFC appearances, Woodley competed in boxing and pursued entertainment and business opportunities. Because several years passed without an MMA fight, many observers naturally viewed that chapter as over.
Woodley’s own description is different. He has continued training and, in 2026, returned to live competition through Real American Freestyle wrestling.
2026 became a true multi-sport year
Woodley’s schedule has included wrestling while he has also discussed future boxing and MMA opportunities. He defeated Joaquin Buckley at RAF 12 after rallying from an early deficit, then traveled to Moscow to compete against Khamzat Chimaev.
Those appearances have given him a way to test his conditioning and competitive instincts while he considers what an MMA return would require.
A comeback would be about choosing the right opportunity
Woodley has talked about conversations with multiple people and organizations in combat sports, but his recent comments suggest he is less interested in returning simply for the sake of saying he fought again. He has described this phase as a final competitive run and has emphasized meaningful opportunities.
That distinction matters when looking at his current career. Woodley is not presenting himself as a full-time UFC contender chasing a long title climb. He is a former champion deciding how he wants the final competitive chapter of his career to look across wrestling, boxing and potentially MMA.
As long as he continues training and accepting competitive opportunities, the retirement conversation will likely remain open.
