Tyron Woodley spent years in the same combat-sports world as Nate and Nick Diaz, but he says their relationship was much more distant than most fans probably realized.
During his September 16, 2026 appearance on The Ariel Helwani Show, Woodley explained that he had crossed paths with the Diaz brothers repeatedly over the years without having a real conversation with them.
They shared elevators and events without speaking
Woodley recalled being around Nate, Nick, Jake Shields and Gilbert Melendez during the Strikeforce era and later UFC events. He said there were occasions when everyone was in the same elevator and he would speak with Shields or Melendez while barely exchanging a word with the Diaz brothers.
Woodley believes part of the distance came from the mindset surrounding potential fights. He had publicly expressed interest in facing top names throughout his career, including fighters he personally respected. The Diaz brothers were among those names.
A recent interaction finally changed things
Woodley said a more recent encounter led to an actual conversation with Nate. The two discussed fighting, overtraining and moments from their careers, and Woodley came away thinking about how many conversations they could have had years earlier.
He also noted that he has always respected the Diaz brothers’ ability to turn their personalities into a recognizable brand. Their unwillingness to perform like traditional media personalities became part of what fans connected with most.
The story shows how fight promotion can shape relationships
Combat sports regularly put athletes in the unusual position of respecting someone while also publicly discussing fighting them. Woodley’s story is an example of how that competitive framing can create distance even when there is no personal hatred.
Years later, with both fighters in different stages of their careers, a simple conversation was enough to change the tone.
