The answer is your name.
Here’s the riddle: “What belongs to you, but everyone else uses it more than you do?”
Work it through, because the trick is hiding in one word: uses. Think about who actually says your name out loud in a normal week. Your family calls it across the house. Your friends call it across the room. Your coworkers, your doctor’s office, your child’s teacher, the person reading it off a list — everybody around you uses your name constantly, to get your attention, talk about you, or introduce you.
And you? You almost never say it yourself. You don’t call yourself by your name, you don’t greet yourself with it, and on the rare occasions you introduce yourself, that’s a sentence or two in a week full of other people saying it dozens of times a day. It belongs entirely to you — nobody else owns it — yet you’re the person who uses it least.
That’s why nothing else fits. Your phone gets used by you most of all. Your car, your shoes, your toothbrush — all yours, all used by you. Only your name is handed to the whole world to use on your behalf while you carry it silently.
