GAME Riddle Answer: “I Speak Without a Mouth and Hear Without Ears”

The answer is an echo.

Here’s the riddle: “I speak without a mouth and hear without ears. I have no body, but I come alive with wind. What am I?”

Work it through, line by line, because every clue is doing a job:

  • “I speak without a mouth” — an echo speaks: it gives your own voice back to you, word for word, without any mouth of its own.
  • “Hear without ears” — it “hears” every sound you make, catching shouts, claps and whispers alike, with no ears at all.
  • “I have no body” — you can never touch or see an echo. It exists only as sound bouncing off a wall, a cliff, a canyon.
  • “I come alive with wind” — sound travels on moving air, and the echo rides it — a shout with no air to carry it would go nowhere and come back as nothing.

That’s why nothing else fits all four lines at once. A recording can speak, but it has a body — the phone or speaker it lives in. Only the echo speaks, hears, has no body, and lives in the air itself.

Did the echo come back to you straight away, or were you picturing a ghost? Drop your first guess in the comments — and try tomorrow’s riddle on our page.
