The answer is 44 hearts.
This card is built to make you miscount, because the rows don’t carry the same number — your eye settles into a rhythm on one row and carries that rhythm straight into the next one. The only safe way is to count it row by row, top to bottom, and let each row speak for itself:
- Row 1 (top row): 11 hearts.
- Row 2: 9 hearts. Two fewer than the row above — and the row most likely to get counted as 11 by a hurrying eye.
- Row 3: 13 hearts. The longest row on the card.
- Row 4 (bottom row): 11 hearts.
Now add them up carefully: 11 + 9 + 13 + 11 = 44.
And that is the whole card — there are no other heart shapes in the frame: no heart confetti, no heart balloons, no hearts printed on clothing, borders or decorations sneaking an extra heart into your total. Every heart on this card lives in one of those four rows. If you landed on 40, you probably counted one of the 11-heart rows as 10 or skimmed the 13 row down to 12. If you landed on 48, the rows blurred together and every row came out even in your head. The full, careful count is 11 + 9 + 13 + 11 = 44.
Did the uneven rows trip you, or did you count each row on its own terms? Be honest in the comments — and watch our page for tomorrow’s counting game.
