How Many Circles Are in the Picture? The Answer Is 21

The answer is 21 circles.

Don’t count in a spiral and hope — count in groups, because that’s how the picture is built:

  • The rings in the center: one cluster of 5 concentric rings — five circles sharing one center, one inside the next. That’s 5.
  • The grid: a neat 3 × 4 grid of identical single circles. 3 × 4 = 12.
  • The corners: one single circle tucked into each corner of the picture. That’s 4.

5 + 12 + 4 = 21.

Here’s the checklist that makes it provable: every circle in the picture is either a ring, a grid circle, or a corner circle — there are no other places for one to hide. No circles overlap, and no circle contains another anywhere except inside the ring cluster in the center. If your count came out at 16, you probably counted the rings as one — each ring is a full circle of its own. If you got 20 or 22, recount the corners: there are exactly four, one per corner.

Did you land on 21, or did the five rings blend into one for you? Be honest in the comments — and watch our page for tomorrow’s counting game.
