The answer is 31 hearts.
Don’t try to swallow the whole picture at once — count it row by row, top to bottom, the way it’s built:
- Row 1: 6 hearts
- Row 2: 8 hearts
- Row 3: 5 hearts
- Row 4: 8 hearts
- Row 5: 4 hearts
Now add them up: 6 + 8 + 5 + 8 + 4 = 31.
Here’s the checklist that makes it provable: hearts appear ONLY in those five rows. There are no partial hearts, no hidden hearts tucked into corners, and no hearts formed by the gaps between hearts — if the white space between two hearts looks like one to you, it’s the background, not a heart, and it doesn’t count. The uneven rows are the trap: rows 2 and 4 are the fat ones with 8 each, row 3 drops to 5, and your eye wants to average them out to neat numbers like 30 or 35. The rows don’t care what your eye wants. Count them separately and the argument is over.
