The answer is 35 hearts.
The card looks simple — rows of identical red hearts on a plain background — but the rows are the trick, because no two rows carry the same count. Count them row by row, top to bottom:
- Row 1: 7 hearts
- Row 2: 9 hearts
- Row 3: 6 hearts
- Row 4: 8 hearts
- Row 5: 5 hearts
Now add them up: 7 + 9 + 6 + 8 + 5 = 35.
The trap is your own brain’s love of patterns. When rows look alike, most counters assume every row matches the first one they counted — count 7 in the top row, multiply by five rows, and land on the wrong answer with total confidence. The careful way is the boring way: one row at a time, finger on each heart, no skipping. Row 2 is the sneaky one — it holds 9, the most on the card, and it’s the row most people undercount by one.
