How Many Squares Do You See? The Answer Is 55 — Here’s Every Size

The answer is 55.

Yesterday’s grid was 4 by 4 and hid 30. This one is 5 by 5 — and the squares hide in five different sizes: 25 smallest squares (1×1); 16 squares made of four small ones (2×2); 9 squares made of nine small ones (3×3); 4 squares made of sixteen small ones (4×4); 1 big square around the whole thing (5×5).

25 + 16 + 9 + 4 + 1 = 55 squares.

If you said 25, you only counted the little ones. If you said 26, you remembered the border but forgot the sizes in between — the 2×2 and 4×4 sets are the sneakiest. Drop your number in the comments, and if you got 55, take a bow: you’re ahead of almost everybody who tried.
