You have probably seen the image. On one side, Namibia’s president in a blue headwrap and ceremonial sash. On the other, Donald Trump. Underneath, in huge letters: Namibia’s first female president “reportedly ordered the deportation of over 500 Americans,” with a quote about visas and fairness.
It is one of the most-shared Africa stories on Facebook — and the central claim in it is not true. But the reason it spread so far is that a real, genuinely significant policy sits underneath it. Both halves matter.
The claim — and the denial
The deportation claim spread on Facebook and Instagram in April 2025. The Office of the Namibian Presidency responded directly, condemning what it called a coordinated spread of false information and stating categorically that no deportation order exists and no mass deportation of American nationals is taking place.
Independent fact-checkers reached the same conclusion. Full Fact found no evidence that President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah ordered any deportations, and Africa Check reported the same denial from the presidency, which urged people to verify stories through official channels before sharing them.
So: no, 500 Americans were not rounded up and deported.
What is actually true
Dr. Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah took office in March 2025 as Namibia’s first female president — a historic fact the viral post got right.
And the visa part is real. Namibia used to let Americans (and citizens of the UK and a number of other Western countries) enter visa-free. That ended on April 1, 2025. Since that date, U.S. citizens need a visa to enter Namibia — a change the U.S. Embassy in Namibia confirmed and advised travelers to follow.
The reasoning is the part the viral post was reaching for: reciprocity. The countries affected were “non-reciprocating” countries — countries whose citizens could enter Namibia freely while Namibians still needed visas to enter theirs. Namibia’s position was, in effect, the same rule for everybody.
One more correction worth making, because the viral post credits (or blames) one woman for all of it: the visa policy was decided in 2024, under the previous president, Nangolo Mbumba, and was already scheduled before Nandi-Ndaitwah took office. She inherited the policy; she did not invent it as a retaliation.
Why the false version traveled so far
Because the true version already carries the feeling people were sharing: a small African nation, led for the first time by a woman, calmly insisting on equal treatment. The deportation number and the punchy quote were added somewhere along the way because outrage travels faster than policy — but they were never needed. “Your citizens need a visa for us, so ours need a visa for you” is a complete story on its own.
That is also why this page is posting the corrected version instead of the viral one. Namibia’s first female president is a real story. She does not need a fake one.

Be honest — did you share the deportation version when you first saw it? And does the real visa-reciprocity rule change how you feel about it? Let’s talk below.
Source note: The presidency’s denial is via its April 16, 2025 statement, reported by Full Fact (“No evidence Namibia is ‘deporting 500 Americans'”) and Africa Check. The April 1, 2025 visa requirement for U.S. citizens and other non-reciprocating countries, and its July 2024 origin under President Mbumba, are documented by Full Fact and the U.S. Embassy in Namibia. The quote attributed to President Nandi-Ndaitwah in the viral image has no verified source and is not repeated here as her words.
