A new Netflix survival thriller is bringing a female ensemble into the Australian rainforest. Screen Queensland announced on October 23, 2026, that production is underway on Feral, a drama based on Shirley Conran’s novel Savages.
Michelle Dockery, Jessica Gunning, Genevieve O’Reilly and Philippa Northeast are among the announced cast. The series follows four different women married to mining executives whose business dealings leave them in danger. Their challenge is not only to endure the jungle, but to work out how to survive alongside people they may barely understand.
Queensland stands in for a perilous world
The production is using locations including the Gold Coast rainforest and the Whitsundays. Director Emma Freeman, whose work includes Australian television projects, is leading the series. According to Screen Queensland, the production brings together Hera Pictures and Warner Bros. International Television Production.
That setting matters. A story about comfort giving way to exposure depends on a convincing sense of place. Rather than treating its scenery as a decorative backdrop, the series’ premise makes isolation and the natural environment essential pressures on its characters.
A survival story centered on relationships
Descriptions released so far characterize Feral as suspenseful and darkly funny. That combination leaves room for sharp interpersonal conflict as well as the obvious physical dangers. The central women are not described as a single team of action heroes; their differences appear to be part of the premise.
Screen Queensland says the filming activity should support hundreds of local cast and crew jobs, as well as businesses supplying the shoot. These are projected production benefits from the state’s announcement, not verified final spending or audience figures.
As of October 27, the official announcement confirms filming, cast and story premise, but does not establish a Netflix premiere date. Any exact streaming release claimed on social media should be treated as unconfirmed until the platform announces it.
For viewers who follow female-led drama, the immediate news is the show entering active production—not its arrival in the streaming catalog.
