Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan Turn ‘Expectations’ Into a Retro Game Show

Critical Content | Reported October 22, 2026

Olivia Rodrigo and Chappell Roan turned a song about relationships into a theatrical competition when their remix of “expectations” arrived on October 15, 2026. The collaboration has its own music video, styled after television game shows from the 1980s and 1990s.

Their label, Interscope Records, announced the release through Universal Music. Producer Dan Nigro, who has worked with both singers, produced the new version. It is described by the label as Roan’s first featured appearance on another artist’s track.

Inside ‘The Big Expectations Show’

The video gives the performers competing characters on a fictional program called “The Big Expectations Show.” Bardia Zeinali directed the clip. David Byrne appears as its host, while Nigro makes a special appearance.

Rather than simply filming a two-person vocal performance, the team built a concept around the song’s title: expectations become a challenge that can be played, judged and subverted. The retro presentation lends the remix a visual identity separate from the original album version.

Two artists with a shared history

The original “expectations” appeared on Rodrigo’s third album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love. Rodrigo and Roan already had a connection through their live performances and work with Nigro, making the single an extension of an established musical relationship rather than a random pairing.

Universal Music also highlighted Rodrigo’s August 2026 Daisy Chain Fields festival, which brought together women performers and raised funds for organizations supporting women and girls.

The remix is available on streaming services, with limited physical versions also announced. For fans, the release offers two ways in: a familiar track reinterpreted as a duet and a music video packed with visual references.
