The answer is a towel.
Here’s the riddle: “What gets wetter the more it dries?”
Work it through, because the trick is in the two verbs. Everything else in your house gets drier the more it dries something — a sponge gives up its water when you squeeze it, a fan just moves air. But a towel does its job by taking the water INTO itself. Every dish it dries, every hand it dries, every spill it soaks up makes the towel itself wetter. The better it dries, the wetter it gets — both halves of the riddle are true of the same object at the same moment.
That’s why no other answer fits. A mop comes close, but a mop is wrung out as part of using it; a towel just hangs there getting heavier with water until it’s done. “Wetter the more it dries” isn’t a riddle about a thing that touches water — it’s a riddle about a thing whose whole purpose is to absorb it.
