Riddle Answer: I Have Many Keys, but I Can’t Open a Single Lock

The answer is a piano.

Here’s the riddle: “I have many keys, but I can’t open a single lock. What am I?”

Work it through. A piano has keys in the dozens — a full-size piano has 88 of them, black and white, running the whole length of the instrument. But not one of those keys fits a door, a padlock, or a car ignition, because they aren’t that kind of key at all. A piano’s keys are levers: press one and it sets a hammer in motion that strikes a string. They open nothing. They play something.

That’s the whole trick, and it’s a fair one — the riddle is counting on the word “keys” sending your brain straight to a keyring. The moment you ask “what else has keys?” the answer walks in. Some people guess a keyboard (the computer kind), and it’s a good guess — but a computer keyboard’s keys are buttons, while a piano’s keys are the original: named, counted, and played for centuries before computers existed.
