If you have ever opened a new rice cooker and found a small plastic paddle in the box, you may have wondered why the manufacturer included it. That accessory is not random packaging. It is designed for the way cooked rice is handled.
What the paddle is for
Rice cookers commonly come with a broad, flat rice spatula, sometimes called a rice paddle. Its main job is to fluff cooked rice and serve it without crushing the grains. Manufacturer Zojirushi instructs users to fluff rice with a nonstick rice spatula when cooking is complete.
The paddle’s shape helps separate the rice gently and scoop it from the inner pot. It can be especially useful for sticky short-grain rice, which tends to cling together more than some other varieties.
Why not just use a metal spoon?
Many rice cookers have a nonstick-coated inner pan. Using the included plastic or other manufacturer-approved utensil helps avoid scraping that surface with metal. Always follow the care instructions for your particular model.
The paddle is not meant to replace the measuring cup that comes with some cookers. The cup measures dry rice, while the paddle is used after cooking.
How to use it
Once the cooking cycle is complete and the manufacturer’s resting instructions have been followed, open the lid carefully to avoid steam. Gently lift and turn sections of rice with the paddle, then serve. Avoid aggressive stirring that compresses the grains.
Wash the paddle according to its care instructions and keep it clean between uses. Some models include a holder so the paddle can stay off the countertop.
It may be a simple accessory, but using it correctly can help keep rice fluffy and protect the cooker’s inner pot.
