The answer is 40 stars.
This card is laid out to be counted properly, row by row — and that’s exactly how we’ll prove it, because the rows are the whole trick. There are four horizontal rows of identical gold stars, and each row carries a different count:
- Row 1 (top): 9 stars.
- Row 2: 11 stars.
- Row 3: 8 stars.
- Row 4 (bottom): 12 stars.
Now add them up, step by step: 9 + 11 = 20. 20 + 8 = 28. 28 + 12 = 40.
9 + 11 + 8 + 12 = 40 — that’s the full, worked proof, and there is nothing else to add. There are no other star shapes hiding anywhere in the frame: no star confetti, no stars on clothing, nothing star-shaped in a border or decoration. Every star on this card lives in one of those four rows, and every star in those rows has been counted exactly once.
If you landed on 38 or 39, you almost certainly skimmed the longest row — the 12-star bottom row is where a quick count drops one or two. If you landed well under, you probably counted the rows as “about ten each” and guessed. The careful count is 9 + 11 + 8 + 12 = 40.
Did you get all 40, or did that bottom row sneak a couple past you? Be honest in the comments — and watch our page for tomorrow’s counting game.
