Tyron Woodley’s role in combat sports is expanding beyond what happens inside a cage, ring or wrestling mat.
Global Fight League lists the former UFC welterweight champion among the athletes involved in its leadership and athlete-focused structure. Public GFL materials identify Woodley as part of the organization’s Athlete Performance & Wellness Council, where his championship experience can be used around fighter development, preparation and advocacy.
Woodley brings a fighter’s perspective to the role
Woodley has competed at nearly every level of combat sports: NCAA Division I wrestling, Strikeforce, a UFC championship run, professional boxing and, most recently, Real American Freestyle. That range gives him firsthand experience with the differences between promotions, training structures and athlete support systems.
GFL describes its athlete council as a group intended to help shape league standards and fighter development. Woodley’s public profile within that group places him alongside other veteran champions and combat-sports leaders.
He is still open to fighting, too
Woodley’s involvement with GFL does not necessarily mean his competitive career is over. During his September 16, 2026 interview with Ariel Helwani, he discussed GFL while also talking about a potential MMA return and other opportunities including Ki MMA.
Woodley has said he is open to the route that makes the most sense for the final chapter of his fighting career. At the same time, roles like the one he holds with GFL give him a way to remain influential even when he is not actively preparing for a bout.
The next phase of Woodley’s career can be broader than fighting
Former champions often move into coaching, broadcasting, promotion or athlete relations after their competitive years. Woodley is already touching several of those lanes through media, business and organizational involvement.
His GFL role is another example of how his experience can translate beyond his own fight record. For a former champion who has frequently spoken about fighter treatment, business and career decisions, athlete advocacy is a natural extension of the perspective he built over more than a decade at the highest level.
